Dead But Still Deadly

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

Today I would like to talk to you about the thought, “Dead but Still Deadly” I was reading in the Bible the account of David and his showdown with the giant Goliath. There is so much that one can glean from this passage, yet this one thing stuck out to me. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. — 1 Sam. 17:50-51

Did you catch it? Goliath was dead from the stone that sank into his forehead, so why did he then have to cut off Goliath’s head? What a gruesome sight that must have been with capillaries, flesh and his esophagus etc. just hanging down with blood dripping as he carried the head away. Well, I believe he had to do it because while Goliath was dead; he was still deadly.

Let’s switch gears for a second and I promise I will bring it back and bring it to a close. When you kill a viper (venomous snake) if you do not crush and bury the head, it is still deadly. What I mean is, there is still venom in those fangs. Any unsuspecting person walking by can step on that head and get stuck with a fang, and BAM they are dead. The snake is dead true, but he is still deadly and that is true as well.

However, even though the giant was dead, all that he stood for, the paganism of the Philistines, their murderous rampage and total disrespect of the people of God, they were still a threat to children of Israel’s peace. Those philistine fangs were still full of venom and able to do much damage. When David cut off his head, it was the same as crushing and burying the head of a snake. Look what happened...The philistines f-l-e-d. No more threat, no more damage, no more humiliation, no more anything. Their power total obliterated.

You may wonder why you go to prayer after prayer, conference after conference, deliverance service after deliverance service and sooner or later, by and by you succumb to the very thing that you thought was dead in your life. I submit to you that perhaps it is because you killed that viper, your Goliath, but you neglected to crush and bury its head and when you were not watching, you stepped on it and got bit just the same. Today, right where you are, while you are walking in your deliverance from your Goliath. Cut off his head, but then crush it and bury it because while he is dead...he is still deadly
